Our Community
Glooscap First Nation (GFN) is a Mi’kmaq community located in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, within Mi’kma’ki, the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. The community is situated near Hantsport and the Minas Basin, an area with deep cultural, historical and spiritual significance to the Mi’kmaq.
Glooscap is one of 13 Mi’kmaq First Nations in Nova Scotia and at the border of the Kespukwitk and Sipekne’katik Districts, two of the seven traditional districts of Mi’kma’ki. The community takes its name from Kluskap (Glooscap), an important figure in Mi’kmaq history and oral tradition whose stories are deeply connected to the lands and waters of the region.
Glooscap First Nation is governed by an elected Chief and Council and is home to a growing community of members both on and off reserve. The Nation provides programs and services supporting its members throughout their lives, including education, health and wellness, housing, community infrastructure, recreation, culture and social development.
Mi’kmaq culture, language, traditions and connection to the land and water remain central to the identity of the community. Glooscap First Nation continues to honour its history while building a strong, healthy and vibrant community for present and future generations.
