New market brings fresh seafood to the Annapolis Valley

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUG 16, 2026: LOCKHARTVILLE, N.S. — Glooscap First Nation celebrated the grand opening of the Kluskap Market on Sunday, marking an important step in the Nation’s long-term plan to strengthen its own-source revenue through Nation-owned businesses. Initially, the market is expected to create 10 full-time and 20 part-time jobs while providing residents of the Annapolis Valley with greater access to fresh, local and affordable Atlantic Canadian seafood.

Operated by Glooscap Ventures, the investment arm of Glooscap First Nation, the market works with local suppliers, with much of its seafood sourced from Glooscap Seafood, another Nation-owned business. Glooscap Seafood harvests, processes and sells Atlantic Canadian seafood from its Yarmouth Bar facility. In addition to seafood, the market offers fresh produce, deli meats and an assortment of baked goods.

Roughly half of the market’s power comes from solar energy, with plans to add more panels and eventually run the market fully on solar power. The site also has four high-speed charging stations for electric vehicles.

The Government of Canada contributed $678,976 toward the project through Indigenous Services Canada, supporting Glooscap First Nation’s efforts to grow Nation-owned businesses, create local jobs and generate long-term benefits for the community.

The project is yet another example of Glooscap Ventures’ broader approach to economic development: building and growing Nation-owned businesses that generate long-term revenue and  good, well-paying jobs.

Quotes

“This is a proud day for our community. When we broke ground last year, we talked about building a stronger future for Glooscap. Today, we are seeing that work come to life. This market will create jobs, support our businesses and bring money back into our community. That money helps us put roofs over our families, support our young people in school and make sure our community has what it needs. This is how we take care of each other and build a stronger future for our children and grandchildren. We are thankful to the Government of Canada for helping us make this market a reality.”

— Chief Sidney Peters, Glooscap First Nation

“Glooscap is the gold standard in Canada for Indigenous leadership in business and commerce. The opening of Kluskap Market is yet another example of a positive initiative that Glooscap Ventures has taken on to retail and support the agricultural and seafood sector in Nova Scotia, and another example of how the community through Glooscap Ventures is building economic resilience for the people they serve.”

Kody Blois, Member of Parliament Kings-Hants

“The new market brings together several of the businesses we have built at Glooscap Ventures. Our construction company helped build it, our seafood business helps stock it and now the market is creating more jobs here at home. We want to keep building businesses that support each other and bring more of the benefits back to Glooscap First Nation.”

— Michael Peters, CEO, Glooscap Ventures
