New market brings fresh seafood to the Annapolis Valley FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUG 16, 2026: LOCKHARTVILLE, N.S. — Glooscap First Nation celebrated the grand opening of the Kluskap Market on Sunday, marking an important step in the Nation’s long-term plan to strengthen its own-source revenue through Nation-owned businesses. Initially, the market is expected to create 10 full-time and 20 part-time jobs while providing residents of the Annapolis Valley with greater access to fresh, local and affordable Atlantic Canadian seafood. Operated by Glooscap Ventures, the investment arm of Glooscap First Nation, the market works with local suppliers, with much of its seafood sourced from Glooscap Seafood, another Nation-owned business. Glooscap Seafood harvests, processes and sells Atlantic Canadian seafood from its Yarmouth Bar facility. In addition to seafood, the market offers fresh produce, deli meats and an assortment of baked goods. Roughly half of the market’s power comes from solar energy, with plans to add more panels and eventually run the market fully on solar power. The site also has four high-speed charging stations for electric vehicles. The Government of Canada contributed $678,976 toward the project through Indigenous Services Canada, supporting Glooscap First Nation’s efforts to grow Nation-owned businesses, create local jobs and generate long-term benefits for the community. (TKMS), as the preferred supplier for Canada’s landmark Canadian Patrol Submarine Project, calling it an important milestone for Canada’s future naval capability, sovereign defence capacity and Indigenous economic participation. Earlier this year, the three Nation-owned economic development organizations entered into a cooperation agreement with TKMS to establish a Pan-Canadian framework to advance Indigenous participation in support of Canada’s future submarine capability. KIEL, Germany; February 24, 2026 – The investment arms of Glooscap First Nation, Songhees Nation and English River First Nation have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), establishing a Pan-Canadian framework for Indigenous participation in support of TEAM 212CD and the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP). The LOI outlines the basis for collaboration should TKMS be selected by the Government of Canada. The Indigenous partners bring together Nation-owned enterprises from across Canada, aligning regional capabilities with the national scale and strategic significance of the CPSP. The collaboration is intended to strengthen industrial, economic and workforce participation connected to Canada’s future submarine capability, while creating direct economic opportunities for Glooscap First Nation’s portfolio companies over the life of the project, including potential work in construction, security and industrial services. Participation at this scale could represent millions of dollars in contracts for Nation-owned businesses. Yarmouth, Nova Scotia: Glooscap Ventures, the investment arm of Glooscap First Nation, has reached an agreement to acquire the fishing vessel  Knot Too Shore  F/V, including all gear and equipment, as part of its continued investment in community-owned fishing operations. The transaction includes the purchase of both a lobster licence and a herring licence, marking the Nation’s first entry into the herring fishery. With this acquisition, Glooscap’s fishing fleet expands to five vessels, increasing harvesting capacity while supporting diversification across species. The  Knot Too Shore  will operate in the Yarmouth fishing area and comes with an experienced captain and crew, who will continue working with the vessel. Glooscap First Nation welcomed the crew as part of its growing fishing operations. “This purchase strengthens our fishing fleet and increases our ability to harvest lobster, while also giving us our first access to the herring fishery,” said Chief Sidney Peters. “Adding another vessel and experienced crew helps grow our operations on the water and supports stable, long-term work in our fishing business.” The transaction reflects Glooscap First Nation’s long-term approach to economic development and investment, focused on acquiring and operating established, profitable assets and businesses that generate sustainable returns for the Nation and its members, without taking on debt. The Weavers Mountain Wind Energy Project and Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) have reached financial close on a $117.4 million loan to support the construction of a 94.4-megawatt wind project in Nova Scotia's Antigonish and Pictou counties. The Weavers Mountain Wind Energy Project will feature 16 Nordex turbines at a 125-metre hub height, with anti-icing system blade technology and a 25-year power purchase agreement. Glooscap First Nation will hold a majority stake in a joint venture with SWEB Development. The project will be supported by Desjardins Group, which will provide $105.6 million in credit facilities, while Natural Resources Canada will contribute $25 million in grants. The financing will help fund the installation of wind turbines and associated electricity infrastructure. The project aims to reduce annual emissions by about 221,000 tonnes CO2e, equivalent to 1.5% of Nova Scotia's total emissions in 2022. This clean energy initiative supports the decarbonization of the Nova Scotia electrical grid, contributing to more reliable, affordable electricity for ratepayers and accelerating the province's energy transition. Nova Scotia aims to achieve 80% of energy from renewables by 2030, with a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation by more than 90%. The wind project is expected to begin commercial operations in late 2026, marking an important step forward in the province's transition towards a more sustainable future. Jan 27, 2025 - Kjipuktuk, Mi'kma'ki Glooscap First Nation and Halifax-based SWEB Development are pleased to announce three of their proposed wind energy projects have been chosen to deliver green electricity to Nova Scotia ratepayers through the province’s Green Choice Program. The projects are expected to have a generation capacity of 315 MW, which will contribute to phasing out Nova Scotia’s reliance on coal power plants and meeting local electricity demand. “As a Nation, we are committed to meaningful action that balances economic reconciliation with environmental stewardship," says Glooscap First Nation Chief Sidney Peters. "We aim to build meaningful partnerships that protect the well-being of our community while addressing the need for cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. By advancing clean energy in Nova Scotia, we are protecting the land, water, and ecosystems that sustain us and ensuring a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come.” Two of the wind energy projects, Yellow Birch and Sugar Maple, will be located in Pictou County. The third, Blueberry Acres, is planned in Cumberland County. The total of all awarded wind projects is anticipated to produce energy at an average cost of $63.62 per megawatt hour, which is below the average electricity cost in Nova Scotia. Glooscap First Nation is proud to announce the activation of its latest renewable energy initiative: a 409 kW ground-mounted solar array, which became fully operational earlier this year. This significant milestone marks a major step toward the Nation’s commitment to sustainability and energy independence. The new solar array will supply approximately 70% of the energy required to power Yarmouth Bar Fisheries, a state-of-the-art seafood processing and lobster holding facility wholly owned by Glooscap First Nation. Located in Yarmouth, this facility is an essential contributor to the local economy and represents the Nation's dedication to integrating sustainable practices into its business operations. This solar project builds upon Glooscap First Nation’s initial renewable energy efforts. In 2021, the Nation installed a 75 kW rooftop solar array at the facility, which laid the foundation for the current expansion. With the activation of the new ground-mounted array, Yarmouth Bar Fisheries is well on its way to achieving full solar energy self-sufficiency. The facility has already begun planning its third phase of solar development, which is expected to be completed by 2025. Once this phase is finalized, Yarmouth Bar Fisheries will be 100% powered by renewable solar energy, making it one of the region's leading examples of sustainable industrial operations. This achievement aligns with Glooscap First Nation’s broader goals of promoting clean energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating long-term economic benefits for the community.
