Glooscap’s mission is to do something today that makes the community stronger for tomorrow.
Toronto, October 7, 2025: Glooscap Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Glooscap Ventures, the investment arm of Glooscap First Nation, has been named Indigenous Clean Energy Company of the Year by the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA). The award was presented last night at CanREA’s flagship conference, Electricity Transformation Canada, in Toronto.
From a rural community of fewer than 500 members in Nova Scotia, Glooscap First Nation has built a growing clean energy portfolio that shows how small Nations can lead big change. Glooscap’s burgeoning clean energy division spans commercial, residential and industrial development, ensuring long-term environmental and economic benefits for Glooscap and its neighbours.

As the majority owner of the Weavers Mountain and Sugar Maple wind projects, developed with SWEB Development in northern Nova Scotia, Glooscap is helping to power the province’s clean energy future. Together, the projects will produce more than 200 megawatts of clean power, creating jobs and lasting opportunities for local communities. Glooscap is also advancing 18 megawatts of solar energy, with one megawatt already powering community facilities and five EV chargers installed for public use.
Through the Wskijinu’k Mtmo’taqnuow Agency, Glooscap First Nation continues to work with other Mi’kmaq Nations on wind energy projects across Nova Scotia, sharing knowledge and expanding benefits for Indigenous and host communities alike.
Glooscap’s mission is to do something today that makes the community stronger for tomorrow. Its clean energy projects have created jobs, generated revenues for housing, health, recreation and education, and positioned the Nation as a leader in Canadian clean energy. Grounded in Mi’kmaq values, Glooscap shows that Indigenous communities are leading Canada’s energy transition.
“This award shows what we can do when we work together,” said Glooscap First Nation Chief Sidney Peters. “Glooscap First Nation is proud to lead clean energy projects in our community and to contribute to regional efforts with other Mi’kmaq Nations through the Wskijinu’k Mtmo’taqnuow Agency. Together, we honour the land and water and build opportunities that will benefit generations to come. This is the true strength of Indigenous leadership and partnership.”
The inaugural CanREA Awards celebrate exceptional projects and organizations advancing Canada’s renewable energy and energy storage industries.

“Today, we celebrate the innovators, trailblazers and changemakers who are driving Canada’s clean energy transformation,” said Vittoria Bellissimo, CanREA’s President and CEO. “The winners of the inaugural CanREA Awards exemplify the leadership, ingenuity and commitment needed to build our electricity future. From groundbreaking projects to Indigenous-led excellence and behind-the-meter innovation, these honourees are setting the standard for what’s possible in wind, solar and energy storage across Canada.”
In 2024, Glooscap’s renewable energy projects and efficiency upgrades reduced emissions by 220 tonnes. Revenues continue to fund community priorities, while investments in scholarships and cultural programs ensure lasting benefits for future generations.
Beyond infrastructure, Glooscap Energy directs benefits to First Nations, host communities and underrepresented groups through targeted procurement, training and partnerships with organizations such as WiRE, African Nova Scotian communities and youth cultural and sports programs.
Glooscap also extends heartfelt congratulations to the other CanREA award recipients, including the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation and Boralex for their groundbreaking Hagersville Battery Energy Storage Park, and to Jayman Built's for thier pioneering behind the meter initiative, Solar is Not an Option.
